    Fellow MABA Members-

WOW!  The end of the year is here already!  What a year we’ve had at MABA.  Our 20th Anniversary year was certainly a busy year filled with celebrations honoring our past, present and future.  It has been my honor and privilege to serve as President during this very special year.

    A year of accomplishments indeed….here’s a snapshot!

    •       Kicked off our 20th Anniversary year at Dusty’s Cellar where it all began.
    •       Hosted 9 socials with 30 -40 attendees
    •       Established a new Lifetime Achievement Award to be presented every five years
    •       Raised $1250 at golf outing for Philanthropic Grants (MABA contributed an additional $250)
    •      Raised $456.50 through 50/50 for Joan Smith Memorial Fund
    •       Awarded $750 grants to Haven House and Lansing Art Gallery
    •       Awarded $565 in Joan Smith Memorial Fund scholarships
    •       Helped plan and facilitate 26 ribbon cuttings and 1 VIP luncheon
    •       Remain in good financial standing with $31,562 cash on hand

The ultimate goal of all the efforts we do is to engage our members for building relationships as well as provide opportunities for prospective businesses to engage with and join MABA to gain business connections.  Overall, this year has been a very successful year.  We continue to look for ways to improve our meetings and our events and to bring value to our members.

Thank you to all of YOU, our members, who continue to participate, bring guests to our meetings and contribute financially through sponsorships and our fundraising events.  Without YOU MABA would not be celebrating our 20th Anniversary nor be the outstanding organization it is today.

    Happy Holidays!

    Marsha

We have had a great number of people who still need tickets to the Gala. The committee has extended the deadline to purchase tickets until this Friday, October 20th.  We must let Malinda know how many are attending so that she can accurately plan for our event. If you are planning to attend, please purchase your tickets prior to this Friday.

    Thank you,

    The 20th Anniversary Committee

WOW!  What a meeting this month….13 guests!  If you weren’t there you missed a great meeting.  We had several members bring guests and the energy in the room was very enthusiastic.  This is what grows our association and builds your business relationships.

We continue to have exciting things going on….our 20th Anniversary Gala is Saturday, October 28th and several of our former members are coming back to celebrate with us.  I’m looking forward to a great reunion, a time of recognition for those who laid our foundation and a look to the future with continued growth and new ideas.  I encourage you to attend.

Next month, we will hold our election for the MABA Board.  Our primary requirement is a commitment to attending monthly board meetings held the third Thursday of month at Dusty’s Cellar starting promptly at 7:30 am and adjourning at 9:00 am.  You are required to miss no more than 3 per year and it is a 3 year term.  If you are interested in serving, please send a 2-3 sentence “blurb” describing why you would like to be a Board member to Tom Conway.  He will add it to the website and an email will be sent out to the membership about a week prior to our November meeting directing everyone to our candidates.  If you have any questions, please contact any Board member.

Also, next month, in the theme of thanksgiving, the 20th Anniversary Committee will have an activity around what we are thankful for during our regular meeting.  Please consider those things within MABA that benefit you and that keep you actively participating in our meetings and events.

As for now, I can tell you I’m very grateful for all the members who joined us at this month’s meeting and to those who brought those 13 guests.  Of course, I’m appreciative to our guests for coming and checking us out.  I hope they enjoyed our company and will decide to become a member.

Until next month….knock on doors and invite two or three new people to come with you!

Things are getting busy!  We have so many events coming down the pike to not only celebrate our 20th Anniversary but several ribbon cuttings and grand openings to celebrate new businesses as they are popping up everywhere.  These are exciting times.

I want to take this time to personally thank all of YOU for your contributions to making our association a great one.  You are the “B” in MABA….the businesses and you are at the heart of what we do.  We want to do whatever we can to bring additional value to you, our members, as we continue to grow.  Thank you for attending our monthly meetings, bringing guests, attending our events and supporting new businesses by attending their ribbon cutting celebrations.  And, on top of it all you continue to contribute financially to our fundraisers allowing us to provide scholarships for professional development to our members and to give back to the community through grants to our local non-profits.

As a MABA member in particular, I want to remind you to take advantage of the opportunity the Joan Smith Memorial Fund offers you.  The fund is meant to assist you if you are taking a course, going to a conference, purchasing software or any other activity you are doing to advance yourself or your business professionally.  Several of our members have used the fund for conferences and training.  But, we want more of you to do so.  The process is simple.  Fill out the application and the review Board will respond quickly to your request.  We do ask that you allow a 30 day time frame from when you need the funding to register for your event.  Put your 50/50 Raffle contributions to good use….YOU!

Another way to increase your involvement in MABA is serving on the Board.   The MABA Board Election process is underway.  Please consider nominating someone including yourself to serve.  The Board meets the 3rd Thursday of the month from 7:30 am to 9:00 am at Dusty’s Bordeaux Room in Okemos.   It is a three year term.  Our Board members serve on committees as Co-chairs and liaisons.

Get ready for next month….at the meeting we will hear from our Board nominees and we will focus our attention to upcoming MABA awards.  Please come and be a part of this important conversation.

In the meantime…..Do Business with a Member!

    Hello MABA Members,

I want to personally thank all of you who attended our July meeting and participated in our Table Talk brainstorming session for ideas to improve MABA.  The Board listens and for those who attended this month's meeting you experienced first-hand the implementation of one of your ideas.  For those who missed it, we changed up Around the Horn and gave each person the opportunity to not only state their name and business name but they were able tell us their primary product or service.  This was eye-opening for many because we learned some new things about each other.  In order to do this, we did forego our Table Talk to allow enough time.  While we may not do this the exact same way each month, we are striving to create additional opportunities for members to share more about their businesses and what they need in a variety of ways.  So, you won't want to miss a meeting!

Well, we are more than half way through the year and what a busy year it has been.  We are focused on growing our membership by inviting new members and retaining current members.  Please join Brad Tkaczyk on September 20 for a MABA Member Blitz.  Brad is looking for at least 10 teams of 2 to canvas Meridian Township to visit business door to door to invite them to MABA.  Afterwards, the group will meet up at a local watering hole to debrief.  Please contact Brad at bradley.tkaczyk@flagstar.com for more details.  This is a great way to get to know some of your fellow MABA members better as well.

Wow!  The 20th Anniversary Committee has been busy and next on the agenda....MABA Tailgate Expo at Graff Chevrolet on September 13th from 5:00pm - 7:00pm.  Please check in with Patty Dean at pdean@hankgraff.com for more details and to sign up. Space is limited so sign up today.  Also, please Save the Date for our MABA Gala on October 28 at The View. A special thank you to Kellie Abbot, Co-chair, Malinda Barr, Co-chair, Patty Dean, Nancy Karkau and Nancy Snider.  You ladies are doing a fabulous job!

Lastly, but certainly not least, please start to think about our upcoming Board Election.  The nomination forms will be available at our next meeting, nominees will give the group their reason for wanting to join the Board in October and the election will be held at the November meeting.  To be eligible for the Board, you must be a member in good standing for one year by your start date in January. MABA Board members cannot miss more than 3 Board meetings per year.  The term is a three year term.  The Board meets the third Thursday of the month from 7:30 am to 9:00 am at Dusty's Bordeaux Room.  Board members serve as co-chair and liaisons for the various MABA committees.  They are also encouraged to attend MABA events including ribbon cuttings.  Please consider yourself as well as your MABA friends.

    See you in September!

    Dear Fellow MABA Members-

Happy Summer!  Even though we are in the midst of summer vacation season we had a tremendous turnout last Friday for our monthly meeting.  The room was energized with a new microphone system that really enhanced the meeting ... people could hear the great information shared by the meeting sponsor as well as each other during Around the Horn.

Our Table Talk topic was "What are some ways to improve MABA?"  We had great discussions going at each table and then we shared a topic from each group to get a hand vote on those we liked.  Great feedback and some new refreshing ideas came from YOU.  In case you missed it, Tom Conway has added them to the MABA Chat section of our website.  Please take a look and add your comments there to the various ideas.  You can still add your own at info@maba.biz.  The Board is taking these very seriously as we are committed to improving our organization so that it continues to bring value and meets your needs today.

WANTED...20 people!  We are having a MABA blitz on September 13!  Ten groups of 2 will canvas the businesses in Meridian Township to share MABA and invite them to check us out.  Brad Tkaczyk is leading this effort.  For more information and to sign up, please contact Brad at bradley.tkaczyk@flagstar.com.

As you can see we have lots going on these days.  I encourage you to get involved in some way to expand your network and to get to know your fellow MABA members better.

Last, but not least, start giving some thought to not only serving on committees and volunteering at events but consider throwing your name on the ballot for the MABA Board this Fall.  Election time will be here before you know it!

Thanks everyone for your support of MABA.  This summer is a great time to join in the MABA fun.  Bring guests to every event!

    Hello MABA Members,

As I continue to reflect about MABA as a 20 year old association, I am struck not only by the longevity of the organization but the caliber of business professionals that we always attract for membership.  I am reminded that two core values have successfully sustained us over these many years.

One, networking to build trust and long standing relationships.  Relationships that can ultimately lead to business transactions but that seem for many to go deeper.  True friendships have been formed through MABA.  Our motto, of course, is “Do Business with a Member” and that isn’t simply a nice sentiment but a tenant that means “I know you and trust you enough to do business with you or to refer you to my friends and family.”

As we all know, however, it takes more time to establish such relationships and MABA has always been committed to offering opportunities for networking and volunteering.  Which brings me to our second core value, community outreach.  MABA has a rich history of working with our local and regional partners to raise funds for projects that serve our larger community.  From buses to transport senior citizens and scholarships for our high school seniors in our earlier years to our more recent endeavors of supporting programs through the YMCA and Helping Hands and scholarships to business professionals, MABA has stood strong.  I still see the bus from Ingham County Medical Care Facility that still has our MABA logo prominently displayed.  That tells me our impact is real and stands the test of time.

So, I encourage you to take advantage not only of the networking provided at the monthly meetings but also the other events and volunteer opportunities.  Our annual golf outing embraces both core values.  This single event not only provides a wonderful opportunity to get to know your fellow MABA members better but it is a prime time to introduce prospective members to the group.  And, because this event is a fundraiser, it allows us to think beyond ourselves and to those we can serve.

Please check out the Calendar of Events on the website for more details about the golf outing and the many other activities we have planned throughout the summer.  Talk to the MABA Board members about serving on committees which is another way to get to know members better.  Work together, play together and grow your businesses together.

    Get involved and have fun!

    Hello MABA Members-

Spring is in full swing and so is MABA!  We had a terrific meeting this month with lots of information and time for networking.  We are striving to provide both in our monthly meetings to bring you the most value.

The Board is always open to your ideas and suggestions.  Tom Conway has created on the MABA website a MABA Chat section for members.  Here we can put the comments you provide us on the comment cards at the MABA meetings (or you can simply submit them to us any time) and we can get the conversation started among our membership for feedback.  We are excited about this feature.

Also, as you know by now, I'm a big proponent of building relationships through participation.  But, often times, especially for new members it's difficult to know how to jump in to volunteer.  The Ambassador Committee will be holding MABA 101 sessions to educate new members on the benefits of MABA and run through the committees and what they do so our new members can plug in where there is a good fit for them.  Some of these sessions will be one on one meetings and others will periodically be group sessions following our monthly meetings.  If you are not a new member but want to join in a group session, please do.

Lastly, but surely not least, the 20th Anniversary Committee is working in conjunction with our Social Committee and Golf Committee to bring to our membership a calendar full of events that will provide plenty of networking opportunities.  Please check the website for a listing of our upcoming events and details as they develop.

MABA (Meridian AREA Business Association) was created for businesses within Meridian Township and those that serve Meridian Township.  As a result, as you look at our membership you will find businesses throughout the region. As we continue toward our goal of 200 members by December 31, 2017, we encourage you to bring guests to all our events.  Let's introduce and re-introduce MABA to our Greater Lansing region business community.

MABA is moving forward....will you join us?

    Marsha

    MABA President

    Hello MABA Members!

We had a great meeting this month!  As I keep reminding everyone it is our 20th Anniversary year and we continue to celebrate.  But, we are also using this milestone year to focus on growing our association and bringing value to our members and our community.  To this end, the MABA Board is working hard to fulfill the goals and objective we set forth in our Strategic Plan.

One of those objectives is to have our committee structure established, our committees filled and action steps in place for each committee to do its part in moving our organization forward.   We spent time at this month’s meeting to highlight our committees and to give those in attendance the opportunity to sign-up as planning committee members or volunteers.  We plan to have the Committee section of the website updated by next week.  If you were unable to sign-up at the meeting, please check out the website for the committee information and contact the committee chairs for more information and to sign-up.  We are also encouraging everyone to volunteer in some way either at specific events and/or for meeting greeters and set-up.  The more you participate the more members you will meet and get to know.  This will ultimately assist you in building your business.  And, it makes MABA fun!

Speaking of fun, check out the website for our calendar of events.  Our next MABA social is Wednesday, March 29th from 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm at Old Chicago in Okemos.

    Let's GROW MABA!

    Updates from Meridian Township

We have added a new page to the MABA website at www.maba.biz that lists the current development projects in Meridian Township.  This will be updated each month after the regular monthly MABA meeting and will be a single place to go for updates.  There will also be contact information for the Township if you have questions about specific projects.
