    Hello MABA Members,

As I continue to reflect about MABA as a 20 year old association, I am struck not only by the longevity of the organization but the caliber of business professionals that we always attract for membership.  I am reminded that two core values have successfully sustained us over these many years.

One, networking to build trust and long standing relationships.  Relationships that can ultimately lead to business transactions but that seem for many to go deeper.  True friendships have been formed through MABA.  Our motto, of course, is “Do Business with a Member” and that isn’t simply a nice sentiment but a tenant that means “I know you and trust you enough to do business with you or to refer you to my friends and family.”

As we all know, however, it takes more time to establish such relationships and MABA has always been committed to offering opportunities for networking and volunteering.  Which brings me to our second core value, community outreach.  MABA has a rich history of working with our local and regional partners to raise funds for projects that serve our larger community.  From buses to transport senior citizens and scholarships for our high school seniors in our earlier years to our more recent endeavors of supporting programs through the YMCA and Helping Hands and scholarships to business professionals, MABA has stood strong.  I still see the bus from Ingham County Medical Care Facility that still has our MABA logo prominently displayed.  That tells me our impact is real and stands the test of time.

So, I encourage you to take advantage not only of the networking provided at the monthly meetings but also the other events and volunteer opportunities.  Our annual golf outing embraces both core values.  This single event not only provides a wonderful opportunity to get to know your fellow MABA members better but it is a prime time to introduce prospective members to the group.  And, because this event is a fundraiser, it allows us to think beyond ourselves and to those we can serve.

Please check out the Calendar of Events on the website for more details about the golf outing and the many other activities we have planned throughout the summer.  Talk to the MABA Board members about serving on committees which is another way to get to know members better.  Work together, play together and grow your businesses together.

    Get involved and have fun!

    Hello MABA Members-

Spring is in full swing and so is MABA!  We had a terrific meeting this month with lots of information and time for networking.  We are striving to provide both in our monthly meetings to bring you the most value.

The Board is always open to your ideas and suggestions.  Tom Conway has created on the MABA website a MABA Chat section for members.  Here we can put the comments you provide us on the comment cards at the MABA meetings (or you can simply submit them to us any time) and we can get the conversation started among our membership for feedback.  We are excited about this feature.

Also, as you know by now, I'm a big proponent of building relationships through participation.  But, often times, especially for new members it's difficult to know how to jump in to volunteer.  The Ambassador Committee will be holding MABA 101 sessions to educate new members on the benefits of MABA and run through the committees and what they do so our new members can plug in where there is a good fit for them.  Some of these sessions will be one on one meetings and others will periodically be group sessions following our monthly meetings.  If you are not a new member but want to join in a group session, please do.

Lastly, but surely not least, the 20th Anniversary Committee is working in conjunction with our Social Committee and Golf Committee to bring to our membership a calendar full of events that will provide plenty of networking opportunities.  Please check the website for a listing of our upcoming events and details as they develop.

MABA (Meridian AREA Business Association) was created for businesses within Meridian Township and those that serve Meridian Township.  As a result, as you look at our membership you will find businesses throughout the region. As we continue toward our goal of 200 members by December 31, 2017, we encourage you to bring guests to all our events.  Let's introduce and re-introduce MABA to our Greater Lansing region business community.

MABA is moving forward....will you join us?

    Hello MABA Members!

We had a great meeting this month!  As I keep reminding everyone it is our 20th Anniversary year and we continue to celebrate.  But, we are also using this milestone year to focus on growing our association and bringing value to our members and our community.  To this end, the MABA Board is working hard to fulfill the goals and objective we set forth in our Strategic Plan.

One of those objectives is to have our committee structure established, our committees filled and action steps in place for each committee to do its part in moving our organization forward.   We spent time at this month’s meeting to highlight our committees and to give those in attendance the opportunity to sign-up as planning committee members or volunteers.  We plan to have the Committee section of the website updated by next week.  If you were unable to sign-up at the meeting, please check out the website for the committee information and contact the committee chairs for more information and to sign-up.  We are also encouraging everyone to volunteer in some way either at specific events and/or for meeting greeters and set-up.  The more you participate the more members you will meet and get to know.  This will ultimately assist you in building your business.  And, it makes MABA fun!

Speaking of fun, check out the website for our calendar of events.  Our next MABA social is Wednesday, March 29th from 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm at Old Chicago in Okemos.

    Let's GROW MABA!

The kickoff Wine and Cheese reception was held on Friday, the 20th at Dusty's Cellar in Okemos.  This is where MABA began!  We had three of the founding members, past presidents, current board members, and members present to celebrate the start to our organization's 20th year. It was a wonderful time with shared memories, stories, and fun.

Matt Rhodes, owner of Dusty's and founding member of MABA spoke about the history of the organization and that it was started to pull together business people from the Meridian Area and help to grow and support local business. Vivian Laux, another founding member, said a few words and received a bottle of Dusty's Cellar wine as a thank you for her years of support of MABA. Julie Brixie of Meridian Township shared her hear-felt story of joining MABA and Chris Buck, from the EDC, also shared what MABA has meant to Meridian Township and his businesses.

A door prize drawing was held with a bottle of Dusty's Cellar wine going to the winner.  Congratulations to Diane Allen for winning the prize! In conclusion, it was a great evening of networking, sharing memories, and fun for all in attendance.  I hope that you will all consider attending one of the upcoming events!

    To ALL MABA Members!

It is my pleasure and privilege to serve as MABA's President for 2017.  This is a very exciting year as we celebrate our 20th Anniversary.  It is extremely meaningful to me since I am a Founding member and have been with the association throughout these 20 years. And, it is exciting for me as I look at our membership today and see many new faces among those who have been there a while. We continue to attract guests and add new members.  Our challenge this year is to meet our goal of 200 members by the end of this year.  We can do it!  We've been there before.

Hang on to your seats as we unfold many new events and activities and brush the dust off some old traditions.  There will be so much for you to participate in at any level you choose, planning events, volunteering at events, sponsoring events as well as attending events. Our association is focused on networking and doing business with members and we do this through building relationships.  So, it goes to show the more active you are in MABA, or any organization, the more benefit you will receive.

YOU are MABA!  Without YOU, MABA doesn't exist.  Please get involved and let's grow together!

    Hello MABA Members!

We have created a new Jobs Board for MABA Members to post available positions that they would like to fill with some of the great talent that the Greater Meridian Area has to offer.  It can also be shared to social media and linked to outside webpages. This is another benefit of your MABA membership because postings are only open to MABA Members!

Simply email a PDF of the complete job description to and we will post the position along with a link to the PDF on the MABA Jobs Board. When you fill the position, just send an email to the same address, and the posting will be removed. If you would like a link to an outside website, please include that link in the email with the PDF.

This will be my last article as MABA President and I am so grateful as I look back over 2016. Life seemed to be chaotic at times, business has been very good, and I feel blessed. It has been a year of getting things organized and ready for tremendous growth.

MABA has made significant progress with its strategic plan. Policies implemented, membership has increased, and business accomplished. The aspect of MABA that I am truly humbled to be a part of is the charitable efforts. As an organization we were able to give three grants to very deserving charities that can truly make a difference in our community.  We were also able to help three members attend educational seminars that will ultimately help them to grow their businesses.

MABA is a networking organization of businesses, but we are also an organization with a huge heart. I have enjoyed being the President and serving on the board. There are so many people to thank, so I will just thank everyone involved in MABA. From the board to every member, you are what makes MABA great. Have a wonderful holiday season and let's make it a great 2017!

An additional Strategic Partnership has been developed with the Greater Lansing Hispanic Chamber of Commerce that will allow cross marketing of MABA and the GLHCC.  We are looking forward to this new opportunity to work with another great organization! Please help me in welcoming them at our next meeting!
