With fall fast approaching, high school football, marching bands, trees turning color, and cooler weather, I am amazed at how fast this year has been moving. We are now 3/4 of the way through 2016 and I have to stop and take stock of everything that has happened. I ask myself, am I better off now? Is my business better? Have I done the right things to make my business better? Time seems to fly by and my answers to the above questions are yes...I have done the right things this year. It is also time to start planning for next year.
For 2017, I plan on getting involved on several MABA Committees again and helping the new President in any way that I can. I want to see MABA continue to grow and become even stronger in the upcoming years.
Enjoy fall and happy networking!
This month my takeaway from the member meeting came from the testimonials given by MABA Members. There are always great stories of excellent customer service from our Members. I think that this comes from the integrity that MABA Members have and the respect for each other from the relationships that have been developed. I like to think that MABA plays a large role in that process. This is why I believe that the testimonial portion of the meeting is so important. We get a chance to highlight that great relationship that we have with another MABA Member and help them to get the word out about their great business. I also think that this is why relationships within MABA are so important. Getting involved, developing relationships, and caring about others is always a good way to grow your business.
Remember to listen closely to others and look for the little ways that you can Do Business With a Member!
Have a great summer and success in networking!
What a great turnout at the first MABA Mixer! Over 40 guests were in attendance. Thank you to the Mixer Committee for arranging the event. Fun, business, and ideas were shared and a few potential new members will be coming to the next meeting. We look forward to having another mixer in August. Hope to see even more in attendance!
As we head into the summer season, I think about networking. There are so many opportunities to network with other businesses, but how do I choose which ones to attend? Which one will bring me the best return?
I approach this in a very simple way. I think about each event and ask myself, will my prospective client be there? Is this where they spend their time? This allows me to narrow down the number of commitments that I have to fulfill and gives me more time to dedicate to my actual job.
MABA is always at the top of my list and appears to be at the top of many of your lists too. The Around the Horn topic was What are your favorite things about MABA and if you could change one thing, what would it be? The answers were great and varied, as you can imagine. Things liked ranged from diversity, committee involvement, consistency in the meeting format, and the relationships that you can develop at MABA. Some of the things to change were more information to new or prospective members to help them get involved and that it is hard for a new member to start to develop relationships.
Remember, MABA is only as successful as its members. If you are involved and engaged, you will get more out of MABA and will develop the great relationships just as I have. MABA is a strong organization and will continue to get stronger with your help. If you would like to be involved, please let me know.
For complete transparency, the current by-laws are listed on the MABA website under the board of directors. These are under review because they have not been changed in almost 20 years. These by-laws may be amended to keep up with the times and allow the board to function in a more efficient way. If you have any questions, please reach out to any board member.
It is with a very heavy heart that we inform you that, Marilyn Larson has recently passed away. Details for her Celebration Service are below:

There have been many new changes to the website recently. If you are one of the monthly sponsors, you can now pay for your monthly sponsorship online! This can be found as a page under the Membership Committee. You may not be aware that as a MABA member, there is a code of ethics and this can now be found under the Join Us tab. Also, Board policies and code of ethics are listed under Board of Directors. As revisions to the By-laws are completed, the entire By-laws will be available to all members too. Please let any board member know if you have any questions.
Barry Tons, age 60, passed away on Thursday, February 19, 2016, at his home. He was born June 21, 1955, in St. Louis, Missouri, to the late Eugene and Phyllis (Feldman) Tons. He was a graduate of University of Missouri and was a staunch Mizzou Tigers fan. His daughters have fond memories of him mowing the lawn with his St. Louis Cardinals hat on and the radio tuned to their games.
In his early career, he was a recreational therapist before Barry becoming a self-employed accountant. He grew his accounting business, Baron Tons, LLC, with his deceased business partner, John Baron. Barry thrived, leading his dedicated staff through tax season, and thought of his co-workers as part of his family. Barry was an active participant in the local business community, forming lasting relationships with the families and businesses he supported. He was also one of the founding five members of MABA.
He is survived by his daughters, Allison (Derek), and Marissa (Steve); grandchildren, Easton and Parker; brother, Bruce (Sherri); and many nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, February 26, 2016, at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel, with burial to follow in Evergreen Cemetery. His family will greet friends at the funeral home from 12:30 p.m. until service time on Friday.
If you would like to have an additional entry into the 50/50 drawing at the March meeting, just find the red 50/50 ticket that is on the MABA website and print a screenshot of it. Make sure that your profile is updated along with a picture, and you will receive an extra entry into the drawing! It is that simple.
This is a fun way to make sure that you have updated your profile and to get the most out of your MABA membership. The website directory is a great way for people to find your business when wanting to do business in the Greater Meridian Township Area!
As I start my term as the new President for MABA, I want to thank Lisa Schroeder for the great leadership that she provided in 2015. There were many challenges that she had to navigate through and the organization is stronger because of her efforts. I hope to provide the same energy and focus that Lisa did.
I also want to thank the board members that I served with last year. We accomplished so many things to move the organization forward and to ensure that it continues to grow.
Thank you to all who help with setup, help with social media, serve on committees, volunteer for events, and come to the meetings. They say that many hands make the work light and this is so true and evident at MABA.
Now, as I look forward to 2016, I am excited with all of the plans, energy, and ideas that are being generated. I am excited to start implementing some of the ideas that you provided in the strategic planning surveys that went out in December. These ideas will impact MABA in many ways and will define the organization and what its mission is for many years to come.
